Nothing beats homegrown. I love watching people's faces when they eat lettuce that was cut five minutes before they eat it. Same with fresh-dug potatoes. That's the thing about a garden—it shows you the profound luxury in the supposedly humblest ingredients.
There is a farm in my town that grows arugula that needs nothing else - I eat it straight from the bag and it is so delicious. But if I do want to make a meal of it, some toasted walnuts, roasted beets and a lemon miso salad dressing are perfect. Fall-ish flavors, but so much depth when they come together!
Huge salad fan here and agree that the fresher the ingredients the better the overall experience. I'm crazy about arugula and love it tossed with sliced fennel, shaved parmesan, and a simple lemony dressing. Pop on some toasted walnuts or pine nuts for added texture. Summer crisp and romaine lettuces make me happy, especially the red and speckled ones (like "Flashy Trout Back") but winter lettuces are sweeter. Please add some mustard-type greens - mizuna, tatsoi or even mustard itself - to wake me up every other bite or so. And by all means add anything colorful or crunchy, be it radish, turnip, carrot, sugar snap pea, tomato, or roasted beet! Maybe we'd get more traction if, instead of trying to make salad sexy, we tell people that salad makes THEM sexy? 😉 Great post, Natalie.
Speckled lettuces are a favorite over here too! I love forellenschluss!! And fennel is one of my favorite crops to grow and eat. I love it so much and once it starts coming in in June, I'm eating it nonstop in salads. Hahaha I definitely think eating and loving salads makes you sexy, now just to convince the general population 😂😅💚

I've been really into chicory salads as we come out of winter/spring. man, i love salads.
I always LOVE a good chicory salad.
I love a good mix of baby butters, romaines, tango, and frisee, plus some spicy baby mustards thrown in - ruby streaks is a longtime favorite!
Ohhhh yes, I love ruby streams for color and flavor. That's a good one!
